The recruitment process

Give us some initial information below to access the Grade examiner application form. Once we receive your application form, we'll contact your two referees and your application will then be passed for review. If successful, you'll be invited to an interview at our London office.

Once you've successfully completed your interview, you'll be asked to confirm dates to attend the Initial Training and Assessment Course (ITAC) and four days of individual training days.

ITAC is a three-day course that takes place three times each year. The first two days is a combination of assessment and training, and the final day features mock exams. ITACs are fully residential and a contribution towards food and board is payable to ABRSM to secure your place on the course. See our ITAC guidance notes for details.

If you're successful following the ITAC, you'll then be allocated to four individual training days in the following exam session alongside a different trainer examiner for each training day. You'll both examine candidates but the trainer will initially administer the majority of exams. As the days progress, you'll lead more of the assessments until the fourth day, where you'll administer a full day of exams.

Interested in both Grade and Theory examining?

Due to the direct crossover of time commitment required, we can only accept applications for either Grade or Theory examining, not both.

Living outside the UK?

To be eligible to apply, you'll need to provide documentary evidence that you have the right to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Should you be appointed as an examiner, you'd have to be prepared to come to the UK regularly to examine. Unfortunately, we can't cover travel expenses for interviews.

All training currently takes place in England, and while travel expenses for trainee examiners are reimbursed once they're in the UK, we'll only be able to make a donation towards travel costs to get to the UK. Should you be appointed to the examiner team, similar rules relating to the cost of travelling to the UK apply.

To avoid potential conflicts of interest, examiners who live outside the UK would never be asked to examine in their country of residence, or indeed any country where they'd lived or taught for any significant period of time.

The recruitment process

Please complete the fields below, after which you'll be transferred to a page where you can download the Theory examiner application form. You'll need to complete this and email it back to [email protected]. Or you can print a copy, complete it by hand and post it to:

Manager of Theory Examiner Support, Chief Examiner’s Department
     ABRSM, 4 London Wall Place
     London EC2Y 5AU

Once we receive your application form, we'll review it and make a decision on whether you're able to progress to our training programme.

The first stage is an Initial Training Exercise (ITE), which you'll need to complete within a two-week timeframe. Once this is returned, it'll be thoroughly reviewed and a decision will be made on whether to invite you to our Initial Theory Training Course (ITTC), a two-day course that takes place once a year.

ITTCs are held in both London and Hong Kong. We aren't able to pay trainees to attend the training course, but reasonable travel and accommodation expenses (where required and pre-approved) will be covered.

Following the ITTC, we'll ask you to complete some post-training exercises. If you're successful, we'll send you some training papers to complete. These will then be reviewed and a decision will be made on whether to appoint you to the Theory examining team.
