Exam refunds

To support customers affected by ongoing COVID restrictions, for Practical and Performance Grade exams from 1st January to 31st May 2021 any absent candidate will automatically receive a refund. This includes Performance Grades where the candidate has been unable to record and upload their video. You do not need to contact us to request a refund. However, it will help us if you can log in to your account and cancel the exam. Find out more:

For Online Music Theory exams and any paper based exams taking place outside of the UK/Ireland we anticipate COVID restrictions will not prevent candidates from sitting their exam so absentee candidate will not automatically receive a refund and our normal Withdrawal, non-attendance and fee refunds policy still applies.

Face-to-face practical exams, session 1 - USA

Due to current COVID restrictions, we will not be opening our normal booking period in January for face-to-face practical exams in April-June. We hope to provide a practical session later in the year, but need to keep all dates under review as we can only accept bookings if COVID travel and government restrictions are lifted. We will provide an update nearer to the next booking period.

What is Journeys?

We know that there are lots of online guitar tutorials out there but we like to think that there’s none quite like Journeys. Our goal is to help guitarists forge their own journey into the world of music. We want guitar players to love playing their favourite songs, but then have the technical abilities and confidence to keep exploring music.

We’re not about the A to B, we’re here for all the bumps along the way. It’s the journey that counts and we want to equip guitarists with the skills to conquer their musical worlds.

We’ve designed our tutorials to build your guitar skills. You can dip in and dip out of our song catalogue as you please, but if you want to get the most out of your learning and increase your chances of success, we recommend following one of our learner journeys.

To join the journey, you simply select the songs you want to learn. Journeys will then create a pathway of songs to build your technical skills base. This is your personal journey. We hope that as well as reaching the destination of playing your favourite song, along the way you’ll also pick up skills you need to play anything you choose on the electric guitar.

We know that music is deeply personal and although we tried to pick a wide range of styles and genres of both male and female artists for the first 100 songs of Journeys, we know that some people’s favourite songs will be missing. Don’t worry though, we plan to expand the song list in the future; we’re also on a journey!

Compatible Browsers and Devices

Journeys is designed to work best with Google Chrome on laptop or desktop computers and for the best experience we recommend using this browser. You can learn with Journeys on Tablets and other web browser but recording features will not be available.

  • Alternatively, you can edit the tick boxes from your account page.

What is a Learning Pathway?

  • Select the songs you want to learn. JOURNEYS will then create a pathway of songs to build your technical skills base. This is your personal journey. We hope that as well as reaching the destination of playing your favourite song, along the way you’ll also have picked up the skills you need to play anything you choose on the electric guitar.

Do I have to follow a pathway?

  • No if you would rather dip in and out of the song catalogue you can. All the songs are available to learn in any order you wish but following a pathway will increase your chances of success longer term.

I really want to play my favourite song. Why is it not in the current Journeys song choice?

  • We know that music is deeply personal and although we tried to pick a wide variety of styles and genres of both male and female artists for the first 100 songs of Journeys, we realise that some people’s favourite songs will be missing. Don’t worry though we plan to expand the song list in the future; we’re also on a journey!

You don’t need to prepare to join the journey

We don’t assume any skill levels, Journeys is for everyone. Whether you’ve never held a guitar before or you’re returning to it, we’re here for you. We measure your progress in Journeys with skills dials so you can track how far you have travelled.

The dials start at zero but once you have completed your first song you will quickly see the dial increases to reflect the skills learned in that piece.

Our skills dials include rhythm, chords, melody and tone and at the start of your journey they will all be set to zero. Each song has been chosen by our expert tutors in each of the four areas rhythm, cords, melody and tone. Learning new songs helps you progress on your journey and will add to your skills in these areas. Your dials increase by the value given to each area by the expert tutors who have evaluated all of our songs.

Your Saved videos

Can I download and share my saved videos?

  • Our rights agreements with the underlying owners of the songs in Journeys does not extend to allowing the downloading or sharing of your recordings. You can enjoy your saved videos and access your setlist from the dashboard, meaning you can play back your saved performances at any time.

The rehearsal room

Advice on using Soundslice tools:

  • Play and pause a slice by clicking the Play button or pressing the spacebar. The notation will light up in real time, as the music plays.
  • Loop sections easily by clicking and dragging across the notation. It snaps to the nearest note, rest or barline, for ease of making “perfect” loops.
  • Slow down the audio, without changing pitch, using the slider at lower left. Depending on your browser, we support speeds as slow as 25%.
  • For fretted instruments, such as guitar, electric bass or mandolin, use our interactive fretboard. During playback, the notes light up in real time. Otherwise, the fretboard highlights all notes you’ve selected in the notation.

For full instructions :

Why does the playline stop following the notation?

  • If you scroll the notation while songs or lessons are playing autoscroll will be turned off. To turn it back on scroll to the bottom of the music and click on ‘enable autoscroll’

I can’t read music, I prefer TAB. How do I adjust the notation settings? (How do I turn off the music notation to leave just the tab?)

  • Click on the right hand side of the notation to adjust toggle between the different music layouts.

Why don’t the chord boxes match the tab?

  • The chords boxes displayed are in standard position and intended to be a skeleton guide of the chords in the song. The user can use this to improvise their own arrangements rather than the detailed notes and tab being taught in the lessons.

Why doesn’t Journeys’ version always match the original recording?

  • Performances are meant to be indicative of the original song and as such it’s sometimes impossible to capture every detail in the notation. The notation/TAB has been provided as a close guide. Our performers may, from time-to-time, include small embellishments and stylistic interpretations.
  • Our versions of the songs are arranged to make for an enjoyable learning and playing experience. Some guitar parts are altered and/or merged with others in the original recordings of the song to achieve this.
  • As some of the songs are based on the original studio recordings it is not always physically possible for 1 person to play exactly what is heard on the studio recording. Many of the songs in Journeys feature 3 or 4 different guitar parts.

Why are some bits of the lesson transcribed (written out) and other bits aren’t?

  • We don’t teach literally every bar but each lesson has been designed to cover all the material that is repeated/reused in the song.
  • We notate the music in the lessons when it is time to put learnt sections together. This allows you the space to watch and copy the instructor in the video without the notation elsewhere.

Can I print the sheet music?

  • Our rights agreements with the underlying owners of the songs in Journeys does not extend to allowing the printing of the arrangements.

Compare with the expert:

Why can’t I stay in time with the expert?

  • When playing along with this part we encourage you to count along as you play to help stay in time. We are considering in the future adding in a metronome (pulse) to help with this feature.

Completing a lesson

  • How do I know if I have completed a song?
    • Only you can confidently know if you have mastered one of the songs in Journeys. The steps of the lessons, compare with the expert followed by taking it to the band allows you learn the song at your own pace.
    • Skills checklist will appear so you may use this to confirm you have learnt all that is required in this section.

Replace the guitar (take it to the band!)

  • Why isn’t the band the original one?
    • So that you can replace the guitar and listen to the guitar parts in isolation we have re-recorded all the songs using top session musicians. It makes for an authentic studio experience

Why is my performance out of sync with the band?

  • Before making a recording you need to calibrate your set up. Use the setup tool to do this. Making recordings in the browser is hard work and small variations in your setup can alter the results.

If you notice your performance is out of sync:

  • Re-run the device setup
  • Close other applications and browser tabs
  • Turn off notifications

Recording performances is not possible on all platforms or in all browsers, please check the supported browsers list for details.

Why is my performance too loud or too quiet compared to the band?

  • The level that is recorded and that which you hear are probably 2 different things, depending on the equipment (amp/audio inputs etc.) you are using. Adjust the record level and your output/headphones level using your audio input to address this problem.

Why is there an echo on my recording?

  • We recommend using headphones when recording in Journeys. Make sure that the audio coming out of Journeys isn’t being recorded back into the microphone. Using headphones should remedy this.

What’s special about Journeys?

  • Journeys features 100 songs recorded especially for you so that you can play as the guitarist in the band. We want you to have the skills to become the guitar player of the songs you love. We also want you to have the technical abilities to go beyond this and features such as the ability to record your playing, slow down the lesson and loop difficult sections to aid practice will help you develop as a musician.

Is Journeys better than a teacher?

  • Journeys is designed to help you build your skills gradually in a way that randomly picking songs to learn via online videos does not.
  • Journeys could be used in combination with traditional 1 to 1 lessons on Guitar. Your teacher could provide feedback to what you have learnt and suggest extension activities, further listening and songs based on material you have learnt.

How quickly will I learn to play the guitar using Journeys?

  • Learning any instrument takes time, and this is your personal journey. How fast you travel is up to you and the practice you put in, but Journeys will break the key elements of each song down into digestible chunks so you can see that you are making progress quickly.

Do I need to be able to read music to learn with Journeys?

  • Absolutely not. All our lessons feature videos that show you exactly what and how to play whether you can read the music or not. The appearance of the notation can be altered to show notation, TAB, or chords. You can even turn it off completely if you would prefer.
