ABRSM’s World Theatre Day Competition inspires musical imagination
In celebration of this year’s World Theatre Day, we launched a song competition on 27 March, where participants were invited to submit a video singing Pure Imagination from the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to win musical theatre repertoire books.
Throughout a two-week period, 36 talented singers of all ages entered the competition. Alongside great singing, performers demonstrated their imagination and creativity in various forms: dressing up as Willy Wonka, duetting with a parrot and sheltering under an umbrella from a shower of sweets…
Jenna, one of the earliest participants to submit her video, said, “I extremely enjoyed recording the piece!” Stefani, mother of another performer, also shared her support: “Tilly thoroughly enjoyed this - a great initiative as music has been so important in these times.”
Here is the competition montage video showcasing participants’ footage. We hope you will enjoy the performance as much as we do.
Pure Imagination is featured on our Grade 4 Singing for Musical Theatre syllabus. To find out more please visit www.abrsm.org/sfmt
