Scales and arpeggios are essential tools for developing musicians. As a follow up to her Libretto article on how to make meaningful connections between scales and other areas of learning, Louise Matthew shares some of her scale warm-ups for flute.

Each set of exercises relates to a particular piece. Two of the pieces are on the current flute syllabus: the traditional Irish The Rakes o’ Mallow (Grade 1 List A) and Whistlin’ by Dave Stapleton (Grade 3 List B).

The third set of warm-ups relates to Gossec’s Tambourin. While not on the current syllabus, this is always a favourite with pupils and a great little concert piece at around Grade 6 level.
