Latest exam updates

Performance Grades: Booking for June Performance Grades is open now until 13 May.

Performance Grade exams

We are pleased to confirm that we will be offering Performance Grade exams every month for the remainder of 2021. Please check our Dates and Fees page for details.

Grade 5 Music Theory waiver (not applicable in the UK & Ireland)

We are extending our Grade 5 Music Theory waiver until 23 May 2021. This means that candidates with a Grade 6 to 8 Performance Grade exam submission date up to and including 23 May can take their exam without first passing Grade 5 Music Theory. We are making this exceptional arrangement to allow candidates who have been unable to take an exam in recent months to progress with their learning. From 24 May, the Grade 5 Music Theory requirement will return. For exam dates/exam submission dates after 23 May, all candidates taking a Grade 6 to 8 Performance or Practical Grade must first pass Grade 5 Music Theory.

ABRSM Music Teacher Conference – Singapore

On 25-26 November we were delighted to welcome over 150 teachers to our first Music Teacher Conference in Singapore! It was an action-packed event, with two keynotes and 21 practical sessions for teachers to choose from, all delivered by experts from the music education world.

The first Keynote “Teacher as Leader” was delivered by ABRSM Chief Examiner, John Holmes. This encouraged teachers to reflect on aspects of leadership in their own working practice, which include: having influence, taking responsibility, empowering others, and inspiring people. The second Keynote “In Harmony – A Guide To Being An Integrated Teacher” was presented by Conductor and Integral Coach, Jason Lai. This session drew our attention to aspects of mind, heart, and body, with an emphasis on valuing and looking after ourselves.

Taking place at NTUC Centre, 1 Marina Boulevard, we were delighted to work together with main sponsor and event supporter, the National Coaches and Instructors Association (NICA). NICA is the collective body advancing the interests of instructors and coshes in the fields of performing arts, sports and wellness. Many teachers signed up as members during the event and could also benefit from 50% funding towards their conference fees. To find out more about NICA, click here.

“The idea of this conference is to provide an annual end-of-year get together and refresher for music teachers. Given the isolated nature of our working practice, it is a great opportunity to spend time together, make new acquaintances, share ideas and collectively learn from one another. Most importantly, it is a chance to benefit from a whole range of insightful and interactive sessions, all designed to help expand your teaching toolkit and encourage you to reflect further on your practice.” Ryan Lewis, ABRSM South & East Asia Regional Consultant.

Thank you to all our presenters for your wonderful sessions and significant contribution: John Holmes, Jason Lai, Darius Lim, Susanna Saw, Loo Bang Hean, Chi Hoe Mak, Jerison Harper Lee, Dr Indra V. Selvarajah, Dr Khoo Hui Ling, Datin’ Kathryn Ang, Dr Andrew Filmer, Leslie Tan, and Gabriel Lee.

Finally, thank you to all the keen and enthusiastic teachers who attended this special event and look out for details of our 2020 programme, including another Music Teacher Conference!
