Hitting the right note: ABRSM and Hal Leonard Europe team up for Singing for Musical Theatre Songbooks

ABRSM and Hal Leonard Europe have hit the right note by working together and publishing new Singing for Musical Theatre Songbooks! This new partnership supports the recent launch of ABRSM’s Singing for Musical Theatre exams, for Grades 1–3.

The songbook collection covers Grades 1, 2 & 3 and includes everybody’s favourite songs from musicals including: Les Misérables, The Jungle Book, Aladdin, School of Rock, Shrek, plus many more.

Jeremy Phillips, ABRSM Executive Director: Commercial, said “ABRSM and Hal Leonard have combined their world renowned expertise in syllabus development and music publishing to develop this wonderful new resource for singers. We look forward to building on the hugely successful launch of our Singing for Musical Theatre syllabus with these fabulous new supporting books”

Each songbook includes 12 songs, selected from lists A, B and C (four pieces per list) from ABRSM’s Singing for Musical Theatre syllabus. With a broad repertoire range, the arrangements for these well-known classics have been carefully selected to encourage safe singing, a route for changing voices as well as age-appropriate content.

Mark Mumford, Managing Director, Hal Leonard Europe said “We are thrilled to be publishing these graded Singing for Musical Theatre collections with ABRSM and to be exclusively distributing them to our trade customers in the UK and around the world. These collections contain specially selected songs from some of the best-known musicals and provide teachers and students with a fantastic resource for young voices that are ideal for auditions as well as the exams.”

The Singing for Musical Theatre Songbooks are exclusively distributed through Hal Leonard Trade customers in the UK and around the world, and are available to purchase now.

A living list

ABRSM’s Singing for Musical Theatre syllabus was first published online and is a living list. This is so that it can be regularly refresh and updated, allowing candidates to perform songs from the latest musicals in the exam room.

We recently added a further 30 songs across Grades 1-3 to the syllabus. The added songs feature in recent shows and films such as Mary Poppins Returns, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again as well as some re-discovered favourites.

The updated lists are available now, and the added songs can be used in exams from 1 January 2020.
