We are pleased to announce the release of Joining the Dots for Piano Grades 6, 7 and 8.

Joining the Dots for Piano, Grade 6

Joining the Dots for Piano, Grade 7

Joining the Dots for Piano, Grade 8

Joining the Dots helps build students’ confidence and improve their skills in reading music at sight, both in exams and when learning new pieces.

Written by Alan Bullard, the eight books cover the keys found in ABRSM’s sight-reading tests at Grades 1 to 8. The series engages students with creative exercises and encourages familiarisation with the relevant key signatures for each grade.

Why use Joining the Dots?

Good sight-reading skills enable students to perform new music with confidence. Practising sight-reading over time helps candidates achieve their full potential in the exam, but it can sometimes be challenging to fit regular study into weekly lessons. Joining the Dots helps solve that problem by providing short exercises for teachers to explore in lesson time, which students can then work through on their own during practice.

Book structure

The sight-reading test in each ABRSM graded exam focuses on a number of specific keys. In each book, these are explored in turn through warm-up and technical exercises, improvisation, and short pieces to sight-read. This method builds a deeper understanding of keyboard geography, and develops students’ ability to read new music more quickly and easily.

Activites include:

  • Key Features – help the student familiarise themselves with the keys at each grade
  • Workouts – warm up and technical exercises help establish basic hand shapes and finger patterns within each key
  • Transpose – encourage a confident sense of key and develop skills in reading by shape
  • Make Music – build confidence in creative and imaginative work, and develop musical ideas and aural skills through simple improvisation exercises
  • Read and Play – work through examples and practise how to approach sight-reading in the exam: read the title, work out the rhythm, find the notes and play the music!

Where can I purchase Joining the Dots?
